Individualized Approach
Accommodations look different for every person and depend on what each individual needs during their time at Northwest. Needs may even vary from semester to semester. Each student’s accommodation plan is unique and may include one or more of the accommodations below. Students may require an accommodation not featured on this list. The Title IX and Equity: Accommodations and Accessibility Office will work through an interactive process with the student to determine what accommodations may be needed.
Students self-disclose the need for an accommodation, and must complete and then submit the fillable form and supporting documentation.
Students may bring an emotional support animal (ESA) into their Housing facilities by going through the formal accommodation process. Students must follow the process for requesting an accommodation.
More about ESAService dogs can be brought to campus without prior approval. However, contacting the Title IX and Equity: Accessibility and Accommodations Office can help to ensure a smooth experience.
Service dogs assisting individuals with physical disabilities are generally permitted in all facilities and programs on the university campus except as described in the policy.
MORE ABOUT Service AnimalsTesting accommodations can include but are not limited to: extended time on exams, exams taken in a distraction reduced environment, reader, scribe, and breaks during the exam. Students intending to utilize their testing accommodation may schedule their exam with the Proctoring Center.
Note taking accommodations allow students whose disability impacts their ability to take notes and capture lecture materials. This may include utilizing a computer to take notes, audio recording lectures, and access to notes and slides used during class. What type of accommodation is provided is dependant upon how the student's disability impacts their ability to take notes.
Kurzweil is an assistive technology learning tool with features that support reading, writing, and test taking. Kurzweil is also the platform that the Title IX and Equity: Accessibility and Accommodations Office utilizes when students need access to digital textbook options.
Temporary impairments are generally not regarded as disabilities, but conditions such as broken bones, short-term illnesses and recovery from surgery or medical conditions can impact a student’s academic progress.
The Office of Title IX & Equity can provide temporary services to assist students in their academic work. An appointment may be set up with one of the professional staff members to coordinate and arrange the services that are needed. Documentation of the medical condition may be necessary to arrange services.
If the temporary condition involves mobility issues (e.g. use of walker or crutches), Northwest Missouri State University does not provide personal shuttle services to and from classes. For more information, contact us at 660-562-1873.
